The TranzAlpine | New Zealand's most scenic train ride

Experience the iconic TranzAlpine Express - a dream for many, now in reach for participants on our West Coast Wilderness Cycle Tour. Instead of returning to Christchurch by minibus, hop on the TranzAlpine in Greymouth. Soak up the breathtaking scenery from the open panoramic coach as you cross the majestic Arthur's Pass.

The TranzAlpine Express, regarded as one of the World’s great train journeys, takes you on a breathtaking 223km ride from Greymouth back to Christchurch. The Midland line, which took 37 years to build, had many daunting barriers to overcome before it was finally opened, with the completion of the Otira tunnel, in 1923. Just one 13km stretch along the Waimakariri Gorge includes 16 tunnels and the 73-meter high, staircase viaduct – quite an engineering feat!

What to expect?

The TranzAlpine train journey takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand. From the comfort of your seat, you'll be treated to views of snow-capped mountains, alpine rivers, and vast open plains.

You will be leaving Greymouth at 2:15pm, arriving back in Christchurch at 7:00pm. You will have to make your own way from the railway station to the airport (taxi/uber take about 40mins, depending on traffic conditions) or into town (depending on your further travel plans).

The cost is $249.00 per person.
