LOVED it all. Brilliant to see different abilities catered for - that was superb. Excellent guiding, Angelika. Great group - made it such a happy tour as well - now lifelong friends. So enjoyed the variety of activities. This trip was world class. So much more than just tramping, everything one could possibly want in a very special environment.

📌New Itinerary
Take Your Time Through Ancient Rainforests, Wild Lakes & Hidden Waterways
The West Coast Experience is perfect for women who love being active but prefer to take their time - with a few hours of walking each day and plenty of space to simply breathe it all in. Starting and ending in Christchurch, this unhurried journey takes you deep into one of New Zealand's most dramatic and least-visited landscapes. Gentle trails through ancient rainforests, along wild beaches and around mirror-like lakes fill your days - but what truly sets this tour apart are the water adventures: cruise through untouched wetlands, take a jet boat into a remote river valley, and explore hidden corners by water taxi. Short walks of 20 minutes to 3.5 hours mean you arrive refreshed, not exhausted - leaving plenty of energy to savour home-cooked meals and the company of like-minded women each evening.
Day 1: Christchurch to Wanaka – Tekapo & Mt John Walk
We meet in Christchurch between 09:30 and 10:00 am and begin our journey south across the Canterbury Plains towards the Southern Alps. Our first special stop is Lake Tekapo, where the striking turquoise water contrasts beautifully with the surrounding mountains. We drive up Mt John and enjoy a short walk to the summit, with wide views opening up across the lake and the Mackenzie Basin. It’s one of those places where you naturally pause and take it all in. You will have an opportunity to get lunch (not included) in Tekapo.
The journey continues through the open landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin and over Lindis Pass before arriving in Wānaka in the late afternoon. We are based here for three nights.
Driving: ~ 6 hours (incl. stops) / ~ 430 km
Walking: ~ 1 hour
Accommodation: Wānaka - Lodge
Meals: D
Day 2: Lake Wānaka – Water Taxi & Shepherd’s Lookout
Today is all about being on and around water. A water taxi takes us across Lake Wānaka to the more remote Stevenson’s Peninsula. Out on the lake, the perspective changes completely, with the mountains rising straight from the water.
From the landing point, the walk to Shepherd’s Lookout leads gently uphill through open farmland and along a ridge. With every step, the views become wider, opening up across the lake and surrounding ranges. It’s a quieter area, and that sense of space really stands out. After some time to enjoy the views, we return by boat to Wānaka.
Driving: minimal
Walking: ~ 1.5–2 hours / ~ 5.5 km
Accommodation: Wānaka - Lodge
Meals: B, L, D, S
Day 3: Mt Aspiring National Park – Rob Roy Glacier Track
Today we head into Mt Aspiring National Park and into the beautiful Matukituki Valley. The drive into the valley already feels like stepping into a different world, with braided rivers, farmland and steep mountain faces surrounding us. It’s a wide, open landscape that gives a real sense of scale.
From here, the Rob Roy Glacier Track leads through native beech forest, across a swing bridge and steadily uphill into an alpine basin. As the forest opens up, waterfalls and glacier views begin to dominate the landscape. The final section offers a close view of the glacier hanging high above the valley. We might encounter some cheeky Kea mountain parrots before we head back down.
Driving: ~ 2 hours / ~ 60 km return
Walking: ~ 3.5 hours / ~ 10 km return
Accommodation: Wānaka - Lodge
Meals: B, L, D, S
Day 4: Wānaka to Fox – Haast Pass & Waiatoto River Jet Boat Tour
The route west via Haast Pass is one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand. The landscape gradually shifts from dry inland valleys to dense rainforest, with waterfalls, rivers and thick vegetation becoming more dominant as we approach the coast. Several short stops along the way allow time to experience these contrasts.
In the early afternoon, the Waiatoto River offers one of the more unexpected highlights of the tour. By jet boat, this remote and rarely visited area opens up, with wide riverbeds, rainforest and a strong sense of isolation. It’s less about speed and more about entering a landscape that feels untouched. A final stop at Ship Creek leads through swamp forest with towering kahikatea trees before continuing to Fox, our base for the next two nights.
Driving: ~ 5-6 hours (incl. stops) / ~ 260 km
Walking: short walks (20-40 mins)
Accommodation: Fox – Guesthouse
Meals: B, L, D, S
Day 5: Fox Glacier Area – Lakes, Forest & Glacier Views
Today offers a relaxed mix of some of the best short walks on the West Coast. One of the highlights is Lake Matheson, known for its calm reflections of Aoraki / Mt Cook and Mt Tasman. The track loops through ancient forest, with changing views of lake and mountains throughout. There are several other options nearby, including rainforest walks and glacier viewpoints.
The day is flexible and shaped around weather conditions and the group.
Driving: minimal
Walking: ~ 2-3 hours
Accommodation: Fox – Guesthouse
Meals: B, L, D, S
Day 6: Fox to Ōkārito – A Hidden Coastal Gem
A short drive north leads to Ōkārito, a small and very special settlement on the West Coast, where we stay tonight. Ōkārito is known for its vast lagoon, extensive wetlands and strong sense of quiet. It’s a place where nature still feels largely undisturbed, with a long history connected to early Māori settlement and later gold mining.
In the afternoon, the walk to the 3 Mile Lagoon leads through native forest and out towards the lagoon and wild coastline. The combination of forest, still water and open beach gives this area a very distinct character.
Driving: ~ 45-60 mins / ~ 40 km
Walking: ~ 2-3 hours
Accommodation: Ōkārito - Cottages
Meals: B, L, D, S
Day 7: Ōkārito Lagoon & Hokitika Waterways
Today continues the theme of experiencing the West Coast from the water.
In the morning, a guided bird watching tour takes us out onto the Ōkārito Lagoon, New Zealand’s largest wetland. The focus here is on the atmosphere – calm waterways, reflections and the feeling of moving slowly through this unique environment.
Later, the journey continues to Hokitika, tonight’s base. In the late afternoon, another perspective follows on a scenic Mahinapua waterways cruise along historic routes once used by early settlers and gold miners.
Driving: ~ 2-2.5 hours / ~ 130 km
Accommodation: Hokitika - B&B
Meals: B, L, D, S
Day 8: Hokitika Gorge – Arthur’s Pass – Christchurch
Our final day still has a few memorable stops. The morning begins at Hokitika Gorge, where vivid turquoise water winds through dense forest and pale rock. A well-formed track leads to several viewpoints, each offering a slightly different perspective.
The journey then continues across the Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass. Along the way, there’s a stop in Ōtira Valley, a wide alpine setting framed by steep mountain slopes, where we can enjoy a lovely walk. You will have an opportunity to get lunch (not included) at Arthur’s Pass village.
In the afternoon, the road leads back to Christchurch, where the tour finishes around 4:00 pm.
Driving: ~ 4-4.5 hours / ~ 250 km
Walking: ~ 2-3 hours
Meals: B
B-Breakfast L-Lunch D-Dinner S-Snack
Tour Grading
🥾 West Coast Experience – Grade 1–2 (Easiest to Easy) with one optional Grade 3 section (Moderate)
This tour offers a beautiful mix of easy walks – mostly flat or gently undulating tracks, with walking times ranging between 20 minutes and 3.5 hours. There’s one longer day (Grade 3) that involves more time on foot, but it can be shortened if needed, so you’re never pushed beyond your comfort zone.
You can find more about how we grade our tours here: → Our Hiking Track Grading System explained
👉 Our recommendation
Ideal for women with little or no hiking experience, or for those who have done plenty in the past and now prefer shorter, enjoyable walks. It’s also the perfect way to (re)discover your joy for walking – in a relaxed and supportive group atmosphere.
